Positive or negative – what perspective do you want to bring to this moment?

It’s a simple question, but one that has the power to shape your entire outlook on life. For me, it all begins in the mind. What we choose to think is what will have the biggest impact on our view of the world.

While I’m not an expert on the topic, I’ve learned a few things over the course of my 42 years of life experience. In my opinion, the world can be seen from a positive perspective, even in the face of adversity. That’s not to say that bad things don’t happen, or that we shouldn’t experience negative emotions. But when we approach life from a more positive mindset, we’re more likely to recognize the positivity that exists in the world.

For me, a positive mindset means not letting my emotions make decisions for me. While I still experience moments of sadness, anger, and frustration, I don’t let those emotions cloud my judgment. I’ve found that when I approach life from a more level-headed perspective, the decisions I make are generally better for me.

Of course, I’m not perfect, and I don’t strive for perfection. Rather, I’m continually working towards being the best version of myself. I forgive myself when I fall short, and I’m always looking for ways to improve. And while I value the opinions of others, the only opinion that truly matters is my own.

So, whether you’re just starting out on your personal growth journey or you’re looking to make a change, I encourage you to consider the power of mindset. It’s not always easy, but by choosing a more positive perspective, you might be surprised at what you’re able to achieve.

The Power of Choice

Every day, we make countless choices, some as simple as deciding what to wear or what to eat for breakfast, while others carry more weight, like career decisions or how to handle conflicts in our relationships. However, one of the most crucial choices we make is often overlooked: the choice of our mindset.

As the famous motivational speaker Zig Ziglar once said, “Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will.” Choosing to adopt a positive mindset can have a significant impact on your mental health, relationships, and success in life.

My Journey to a Positive Mindset

I have not always operated from a positive frame of mind. My mind was often filled with doubts about my abilities in sports and my ability to build my own business. I failed twice on that mission. I started telling myself the story that I wasn’t good enough or even capable of such things.

Then, during a family vacation, I found myself sitting on the beach and realized that I couldn’t continue with this mindset. Deep down, I knew I was capable of so much more. I began journaling somewhat frequently over the next several months, which eventually turned into a daily habit at the start of this year. I started setting deadlines for tasks and found myself completing them much faster than expected, mostly because I was writing about them daily.

This daily effort to be more positive not only changed my mindset to a more positive framework but also allowed me to mentally see the daily tasks of my life more clearly. I began to accomplish so much more when negativity was removed, and the clarity of positivity shined through.

Steps to Change Your Perspective

  1. Practice gratitude: Begin and end your day by listing three things you’re grateful for. This can help shift your focus from negativity to positivity.
  2. Set achievable goals: Break down your long-term goals into smaller, manageable steps to maintain a positive outlook.
  3. Surround yourself with positivity: Engage with positive people, read uplifting books, and consume content that promotes a positive mindset.
  4. Challenge negative thoughts: When negative thoughts arise, question their validity and replace them with more constructive ideas.
  5. Reflect on your progress: Regularly assess your mindset and celebrate your growth.

The Ripple Effect of a Positive Mindset

When we choose to adopt a positive mindset, we create a ripple effect that extends far beyond our personal lives. The benefits of a positive mindset can be seen in our relationships, our work environment, and even our communities.

By focusing on the positive aspects of life, we’re more likely to connect with others, build strong relationships, and foster a supportive network. In the workplace, a positive mindset can lead to increased productivity, enhanced creativity, and improved collaboration among team members. Our communities can also benefit from the collective positivity of its members, leading to increased empathy, understanding, and social cohesion.

Final Thoughts

The power of choice is immense, and the decision to adopt a positive or negative mindset can shape the trajectory of our lives. By consciously choosing to focus on the positive aspects of our lives and challenging negative thoughts, we can experience a wide range of benefits, from improved mental health to better relationships and greater success in our personal and professional lives.

Remember, adopting a positive mindset is a journey, not a destination. It requires continuous effort and self-reflection. Embrace the power of choice and take the first steps towards a more positive, fulfilling life. You’ll be amazed at what you can achieve when you choose to see the world through a more positive lens.
